Achieving the right balance between portability, elegance, and genuine musicality is no small feat. With the new-generation MUO, KEF revisits one of its iconic portable loudspeakers, originally conceived in collaboration with designer Ross Lovegrove.

I wanted to verify whether this updated version — now reinforced in terms of battery life, ruggedness, and connectivity — preserves the audiophile DNA associated with the British manufacturer.

KEF: A Legacy of Accurate, Refined Sound

Founded in 1961 in Kent, KEF has established itself as one of the most iconic names in British high-fidelity. From the LSX2 to the Blade, via the LS50 and LS60 Wireless, the brand has consistently championed a precise, natural, and intelligible sound — far removed from the kind of artificially boosted signatures that dominate the mass-market. With its connected and portable loudspeakers, KEF has resisted the temptation of aggressive, demonstrative DSP tuning in order to preserve the sonic signature that its engineers have always defended.

I tested the direct USB-C connection via a laptop in order to bypass Bluetooth entirely. The improvement in audio quality, stability, and latency is immediate. Switching from Bluetooth to USB-C is straightforward — a double press of the rear button, and the loudspeaker is automatically recognised as an audio device. The audio stream gains in clarity, with no compression artefacts, and the MUO asserts itself as a high-grade desktop monitor in miniature. For film viewing, video editing, or simply working with a high-resolution audio source, this is a level of convenience that few portable loudspeakers offer at this standard of finish.

Setup and Ergonomics

Bluetooth pairing takes only a few seconds; Qobuz streams without a single dropout. The controls are minimal, legible, and sufficiently responsive. The form factor allows for both horizontal placement — stabilised by four silicone feet — and vertical orientation, depending on room acoustics or available space. The aluminium construction provides a degree of mechanical inertia that benefits low-frequency reproduction and suppresses parasitic resonances.

The KEF Connect application enables personalisation of the tonal signature across five modes: Default, Dialogue, Bass Boost, Near Wall, and Desk.

Even at moderate listening levels, the MUO projects a soundstage that is remarkably credible for its form factor. KEF does not attempt to simulate an artificially widened stereo image; the priority is coherence of the musical message. Voices are rendered without veiling, the midrange remains precise, and the bass does not overflow its natural boundaries.

Equipped with a 20 mm dome tweeter and a 58 mm × 117 mm mid-bass driver, the MUO's amplification delivers 40 watts with a maximum SPL of 90 dB — a genuinely exceptional figure for a portable loudspeaker of this type.

At moderate volume, the MUO deploys a soundstage that is remarkably credible for its size. KEF does not attempt to simulate an artificially widened stereo image, but instead maintains the integrity of the musical message. Taylor Swift - Elisabeth Taylor.  The MUO renders this track with an intimate vocal clarity and a clean instrumental separation that allows for very detailed appreciation of the sophisticated pop mix. It highlights the richness of the upper midrange and treble, while delivering a taut, well-controlled low end — though the physical impact of the bass is, quite naturally, constrained by the portable format.

2. Billie Ellish - bad guy This is the stress-test track for many compact loudspeakers. Built around percussive minimalism, this unconventional mix privileges the frequency extremes — sub-bass and air. The groove holds. The beat does not sag, the low frequencies maintain convincing cohesion, and the MUO handles the challenge with complete composure.

3. Isabelle Faust - Telemann The MUO reproduces this Baroque work with remarkable precision, revealing both the woody, finely detailed timbre of Isabelle Faust's solo violin and the clarity of the ensemble's contrapuntal lines. It conveys the vivacity of the playing and captures the subtle nuances of the interpretation with a transparency fully faithful to the demands of this repertoire.
