Dynaudio has chosen the AXPONA 2026 show in Chicago to preview its new flagship passive bookshelf speaker, the Legend. Handmade in Denmark and loaded with the brand's most advanced acoustic technology, it sets a clear benchmark for compact high-end speakers.

Some product announcements are predictable. Others remind you why certain brands still matter in a crowded market. The Dynaudio Legend belongs firmly in the second category. Previewed at AXPONA Chicago in early April 2026, this two-way compact standmount immediately positions itself as the definitive passive bookshelf speaker in Dynaudio's lineup — and one of the most technically serious offerings at its price point in the current market.

A deliberate heritage

The Legend's design doesn't come out of nowhere. Dynaudio reaches back to two of its most revered products: the 1986 Compound series and the mighty 1984 Consequence. The same hand-crafted curved corner details are here, the visible screws, the rock-solid cabinet construction that made those speakers iconic. This is not retro styling for its own sake — it is a coherent design philosophy carried forward.

The cabinet is built from internally braced MDF, finished with a natural FSC-certified rosewood veneer. Every panel is hand-selected and visually matched by Dynaudio's craftspeople at the Skanderborg factory. The corner pieces are solid Jatoba hardwood, chosen to complement the veneer's colour tone. Each pair is therefore genuinely unique: Dynaudio describes the Legend as an "unlimited run of limited-edition pairs" — a paradox, but an accurate one. No two pairs will ever look exactly alike.

The two-stage finishing process — a thin base coat to raise the wood fibres, followed by sanding and a protective top coat — keeps the grain visible and tactile. The wood feels like wood.

Flagship-grade components throughout

This is where the Legend makes its strongest case. The tweeter is the Esotar 3, a 28mm soft-dome unit fitted with the Hexis inner dome — a dimpled secondary dome positioned close behind the diaphragm to smooth airflow and suppress unwanted resonance. This is the same tweeter found in the Confidence flagship family, the Heritage Collection, and Dynaudio's M-series professional studio monitors used at facilities including AIR Studios and Abbey Road in London. It has not been adapted or simplified for the Legend. It is the same component.

The 15cm mid/bass driver uses a diaphragm made from MSP — Magnesium Silicate Polymer, a proprietary material Dynaudio has developed and refined in-house since 1977. MSP delivers the right balance of lightness, stiffness and self-damping to give the motor system precise control over cone movement. The driver is derived directly from Dynaudio's top-of-the-line studio reference units, with one specific adjustment: the impedance has been recalculated to suit the Legend's cabinet volume. The motor assembly uses a bespoke strontium carbonite ceramic magnet system.

The crossover is a second-order, two-way design with a crossover frequency of 3,500Hz. Its topology is deliberately minimal: Duelund capacitors sourced near Copenhagen, air-core inductors, and low-inductance wire-wound resistors. Internal wiring runs have been kept as short as possible to minimise signal path length. Binding posts are WBT NextGen — the same terminals found on the Confidence and Contour ranges.

The rear-firing bass port features a dual-flared design derived from the one used in the Confidence 20 standmounter. Its geometry — tube length, diameter, and flare angle — was determined through extended digital simulation and listening sessions. Foam port plugs are supplied for placement-dependent tuning of bass behaviour.

What to expect

The 83dB sensitivity rating calls for an amplifier with genuine current delivery. The Legend is not designed for underpowered integrated amps. That said, the 6-ohm nominal impedance is manageable, and the 150W power handling leaves substantial dynamic headroom. Placement flexibility is built into the design: the speaker can be positioned vertically or horizontally, tweeter up or woofer up depending on shelf height.

Retail pricing is set at USD $7,000 / €6,000 / £5,500 per pair.
